Photography basics for Christy

How to start shooting manually with your SLR.

Sunny 16 OR Basic Exposure Constant (BEC)

If you are outside on a sunny day, stand with the sun behind one shoulder, such that the subject is fully lit by the sun, and know that you will get an accurate exposure with these settings:
F Stop: f/16
Shutter speed: 1/ISO
ISO- should use 100 or 200. Therefore, your shutter would be whatever is closest to that 1/125th or 1/250th.

If you turn such that the subject is now side lit and not full frontal, open up a stop to f/11. Back lit, open up again to f/8. When using back lighting, be sure to shade your lens to avoid flare.

Some general facts to know:
1- f stops are fractions so the larger the number, the smaller the opening.
2- Shutter speeds are fractions of a second, so the larger the number, the faster the shutter. Your camera may only say 125 or 250, but it really means 1/125th or 1/250th.
